Bentley calls for support from stands

Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley says his side need supporters to get right behind his team as they prepare for the vital Christmas period.

Morecambe face Dagenham on Saturday at the Globe Arena in the first of four fixtures over 10 days that could have a major bearing on where the Shrimps finish this season – and he says the backing of fans will be vital.

He said: “I was hugely disappointed that we didn’t get the three points against Oxford on Saturday because it would have taken us an important step closer to our first aim of reaching 50 points.

“We got ourselves ahead and there is no doubt we should have won the game which would have given us all a great lift. But we didn’t and we will have to look to put that right against Dagenham on Saturday for another important home game.”

Bentley said the fans could play a huge part in the game.

He said: “I don’t know if it was because there was a smaller crowd and you could hear individuals more but there was a lot of negativity in the stands on Saturday and that was really disappointing.

“We are not going to play like Barcelona every week and the truth is that every point you get in this league has to be well earned. Oxford are still a big club at our level with massive resources compared to us and if anyone thinks we are going to steamroller a side like that then they have it wrong.

“We weren’t at our best and it was not a classic game I know. We did start the game slowly but we never really looked under threat in the second half and were probably the better side which makes it all the more disappointing not to win.

“Even when we are not at our best I know we have a team of lads who give their all for this club week in week out and I heard some individual comments on Saturday which I thought were a bit unfair.

“We need the support of everyone because this is going to be a tough season and every point will be important.”

Bentley will be hoping Nick Fenton and Jordan Mustoe will be fit after both were substituted on Saturday.
