Barry Roche column: We should have got three points

On most days a point against the league leaders would be seen as a brilliant result.

But thats not really the way we were looking at it in the dressing room after the game.

Whilst it certainly wasn’t a bad result we feel we did more than enough to claim all three points.

We maybe lacked that killer instinct to go and get the second goal to kill the game off.

We limited them to very few chances and created quite a few of our own.

Looking at Gillingham you definitely wouldn’t say they are the best side we have faced all season.

But the league table doesn’t lie and they are top of the pile for a reason. And the reason is they are consistent.

Where we have maybe let ourselves down at times is that we haven’t been consistent enough.

We’ll put two or three good results together then two or three bad ones.

Gillingham on the other hand have obviously been very consistent and I think will definitely go up now.

The midweek draw against Northampton wasn’t a classic in terms of pretty football played but in terms of goal-mouth action it was a great game to watch.

Northampton don’t play an attractive band of football but they are effective at what they do.

They put the ball in the box at every single opportunity and that long throw they use is a real weapon.

But the lads stood up to them brilliantly and were unlucky not to hold on for all three points.
