Barry Roche column: Next six weeks could define season

After a horror show against Southend I don’t think we exactly covered ourselves in glory against Rochdale on Saturday.

Don’t get me wrong, Rochdale are a very good side and probably the best we have faced so far but we didn’t perform anywhere near what we are capable of.

We went out with a plan to stop them playing their fluent passing game but unfortunately we never really did that to the extent needed to win the game.

We were second best for large parts of the 90 minutes and never really got a foothold in the match.

Having said that we almost got ourselves back in the game in the dying moments.

After Podge’s (Padraig Amond) cool finish we had a couple of half chances and on another day we might have pulled off another great escape.

We definitely should have been awarded a free kick right on the edge of the box in the last minute but somehow the referee didn’t see it that way.

But then he did let an awful lot go on the day.

We know we need to arrest this mini-slump as soon as possible.

That’s two defeats on the spin and we can’t let this run of form continue.

We are coming into a massive six weeks or so that really can be season defining.

What we need to do is make sure we are in the mix come the turn of the year.

On another note our youth team are playing Bradford City in the FA Youth Cup at the Globe on Wednesday evening.

It’s a wonderful competition and one I have very fond memories of.

So if you’re not busy then why not pop down and have a look at hopefully some Morecambe stars of the future.
