The versatile veteran is an unlikely chart-topper with three goals but Goodall is under no illusions about his real role in the team.

The 33-year-old said: “A few people have said it now but it’s a bit strange.

“It’s nice to score goals but I don’t think it’s going to last very long.”

The goals have come from the former Fleetwood man getting a regular run in the side with skipper Peter Murphy picking up a serious knee injury on his debut.

Goodall was in and out of the Shrimps side in his first year at the Globe Arena but is relishing getting a chance.

He said: “Last year it was frustrating not to be playing every week and be in and out.

“This year it’s good to get a chance and it’s going well at the moment.

“Long may it continue.”

Goodall has impressed many at the club with his work ethic.

He spent two days a week over the summer months travelling to the Globe Arena to make sure he was in tip-top shape ahead of the new campaign.

Goodall said: “I try and do as much as I can, I’m not getting any younger.

“Keeping up with the younger lads is tough going.

“I’ve to make sure I keep my body in the best condition I can to make sure I’m ready for whatever comes.”

The holding midfielder, who has also filled in at left back and in central defence this season, scored the opening in the hard-fought 2-1 win at Newport last time out.

It was a result that Goodall believes shows the progression the squad is making.

He said: “Any victory’s a satisfying one.

“To dig in the way we did was great.

“I don’t think we played as well as we have been playing and you’re not always going to get your own way on the football pitch.

“Going back to last season once they equalised maybe we would have gone under a bit so to come back fighting and get the win in the end was pleasing.”

Northampton are next up at the Globe Arena on Saturday with Goodall hoping The Shrimps can bring their fine away form back home as they look to win a fifth game in all competitions.

He said: “It’s brilliant to go away from home and get maximum points but it’s important to come back on our own turf and continue that form.

“Maximum points is what we’ll aim for but Northampton are a good, strong, physical team.

“They’re one of the fancied teams but there are a few good teams in the league who will be pushing for automatic places.

“As long as we can stick close by them or with them as much as we can during the season we’ll be in with a great chance of being in the mix ourselves.”
