Aaron Wildig: Now we head into Wycombe and Portsmouth full of confidence

Not only did it end The Shrimps’ 16-game winless run against their Lancashire rivals but it also saw them get off the mark this season with tough games against Wycombe and Portsmouth to come.

The midfielder continued the fine form he’s shown in pre-season with what turned out to be the winning goal shortly before the quarter hour.

Wildig said: “You don’t want to look at the table and see zero points.

“It’s good to get the three and we’ve got a tough few games coming up.

“Wycombe and Portsmouth are both quite fancied sides but we’ll go into those games full of confidence.”

Morecambe were short of their best but got over the line for a big derby win with Wildig revealing boss Jim Bentley has made all of the new signings well aware of the rivalry.

He said: “There’s a lot of connections between the two teams and the gaffer has made us know all about it.

“Last year when I played it was 1-1 and we missed a pen and they went down to 10 men it just seemed to be one of those days.

“But today, that was actually our worst performance of the season, but they missed a few chances and that’s football isn’t it?

“You play well for two games and get nothing and then you put in your worst performance and win so I can’t moan.”

Wildig believes getting over the line despite being below par could be a good sign for Bentley’s side.

He said: “We played much the better football in the other two games and created the better chances and then today we went and played like that but won the game.

“Hopefully that’s a sign of a good side. If we can turn those chances in the other games into results and can grind out results when we’re not on our game then we’re on the right track.”

Bentley has demanded more goals from his midfield this season and many feel Wildig could be the man to deliver.

The former Shrewsbury man, who made his loan move to the Globe Arena a permanent one this summer, said: “I scored a few in pre-season and could have got more.

“I started in a deeper role today but got forward and got the goal and ended up playing the last half an hour almost as a centre forward.

“To be fair as long as I’m in the team I’m happy.

“If I can chip in with a few goals that’s good. I’ve set myself a target of five but hopefully I can reach that and set a new target, eight, and then go from there.”
