Torrisholme knocked off top spot after loss

Torrisholme’s 10-match unbeaten run and place at the top of Division One of the Palace Shield were taken by a strong Vernon Carus side on Saturday.

Losing the toss, Torrisholme were asked to bowl. Matt Jackson (0-33) and Daniel Woods (0-24) kept the scoring to a minimum as Vernon skipper Will Adams (18) and Bradley Hamilton (39) rode their luck.

They both survived strong caught behind appeals as contrary to everyone else at Boundary Meadow the umpire thought otherwise.

A change in bowling brought the breakthrough with Jack Heap (1-34) cleaning up Adams.

Another change of bowling saw the next wicket, Neil Jordan (2-36) smartly running out Hamilton off his own bowling.

Craig Cameron (56) had joined Matthew Stevenson (31) at the crease and they watchfully guided the score to 121-2 from 36 overs.

Jordan prevented Cameron pushing on much past 50, having him caught at long off by Woods.

Ben Duerden (32 not out) played the cameo innings and even when Jordan removed Stevenson, caught at extra cover by Jackson, the score was already up to 174-4.

Jackson returned to the attack but Vernon amassed an above average score of 195 from their 45 overs.

Torrisholme gave the reply a real go and stayed ahead of the Vernon scoring right up to the 42nd over.

This was made possible due to a composed knock from Daniel Woods (71) who single-handedly helped Torrisholme recover from a rocky start.

Adam Bee (2), James Ferguson (9) and Chris Parry (4) all fell cheaply. Ferguson did however bat some time and with Woods as Torrisholme moved to 43-2 from 14 overs.

David Sullivan (4-54) was the pick of the Vernon bowling, but not before Glenn Russell (45) had scored well with Woods and Stuart Errington (20) to settle the innings down to a commanding 170-4 from 40 overs. However, Sullivan came into his own with Russell caught in the deep and Errington at point before Jordan (7) was clean bowled.

Jack Heap (0) went first ball and a brief glimmer of hope was lost when Ben Pye (5) and Woods got confused under the pressure and Woods was run out.

Jackson (1 not out) and Graham Lee (0) didn’t have enough to find the eight runs needed with Duerden bowling a brilliant last over as Lee was stumped.
