A powerful lower order batting display with potent seam bowling saw Lancaster to an emphatic opening day victory away at Kendal.

The early dismissals of Jamie Heywood and Kieran Moffat at the hands of professional Eldred Hawken left Lancaster 16-2.

Charlie Swarbrick and Pakistan international Rameez Raja then fought fire with fire before Saeed Bariwala caught Raja leg before for a breezy 14 to end his first innings in England.

His leaving sparked another clatter of wickets and at 53-5 Lancaster’s innings was in danger of petering out.

But Iain Perrieman and Iain Burstow steered the visitors out of trouble.

The partnership of 62 came to an end as Perrieman picked out deep-mid-wicket to give Chris Miller his first scalp.

Burstow left soon after with former Kendal man Lee Sparks then falling cheaply.

Craig Heywood, in his first Lancaster appearance since 2007, applied himself with a measured 16 before Ben Simm’s quick-fire 31 pushed Lancaster from a competitive total to a strong one as they finished on 183-9.

Kendal made a slow start in reply and never recovered.

Left-arm pair Perrieman and Liam Moffat combined to reduce the hosts to 41-6.

Simm entered the attack with Burstow to help clean up the remains of Kendal’s innings, the captain pinning his opposite number Miller in front before wrapping up the victory by bowling Marcus Hill for a duck.
