Skerton Boxing Club had another successful weekend on the boxing circuit.
Four of the club’s junior boxers competed in support bouts at the North West Junior championships in Manchester on what was initially a controversial day for the club.
William Birchall was the first in the ring against a fighter from Blackpool’s Sharpstyle ABC.
To many eyes ringside the Skerton youngster appeared to control all three rounds but after both boxers were called to the centre of the ring he came out on the wrong side of a split decision.
Next in for Skerton was Lucas Cheney in his first competitive bout for the club and he came out a unanimous winner against his opponent from Manchester’s Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club.
Jimmy Mason was then the victim of what the club felt was another poor decision as he lost a unanimous decision to a Northside ABC fighter from Manchester.
Mason appeared to be top from start to finish but again the ruling left some puzzled faces ringside.
Danny Robb decided he had to take the decision out of the referee’s hands in the next Skerton fight with the referee halting his contest in the third and final round having already delivered a standing eight count.
There was some recompense for Skerton at the end of the night with the decisions against Birchall and Mason overturned on review meaning two wins and two defeats became four victories.
The club are hosting a show at the Globe Arena on Friday, March 13. Call Paul Fielding on 077666 55401 tickets.
