Club’s youngsters tackle best in Lancashire

Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club youngsters put in a strong showing at the Lancashire Track and Field County Championships.

In the 100m final senior Sam Higginson posted a time of 12.4 seconds having recorded a personal best of 12.3 in the heats.

Sam also recorded a PB of 25.0 in the final of the 200m.

Under 13 girl Amy Bennett set new best times of 15.0 in the 100m and 30.6 in the 200m heat while there was a PB for Erin Moffatt in the under 13 girls 200m too, recording 30.7s.

Under 15 boy Sam Mercer showed promise with a PB of 28.5 in the 200m.

In the 800m U15 boy James Stanley recorded a best time of 2:16.9 while the club showed its strength in depth in the under 13 girls 1,500m with the County Championship going to 11-year-old Kirsty Hamilton as Erin Moffatt came home in 5:22.3.

The club’s other Lancashire Champion on the track was Mary Hodgson who took the under 20 women’s 3,000m win by eight seconds in a new best time of 10:16.4.

In the field events, Erin Moffatt took an gold in the long jump with a new best of 4.50m. She also picked up silver in the high jump.

There was also a bronze medal in the under 15 boys’ event for Sam Mercer, jumping a new best of 4.73m.

In the corresponding girls’ event, Imogen Graham extended her best jump to 4.42m while also posting a new best time of 13.5 in the 75m hurdles.

The only athlete tackling throwing events, Amy Bennett, recorded 4.86m in the under 13 girls’ shot.

In the Cumbrian County Championships, under 17 Molly Newton-O’Brien was a triple gold medallist, winning the 80m hurdles, the 200m and the high jump.

In the same championships Heidi Murray won the bronze medal in the under 17 women’s 800m.
