The hosts had beaten their own fifth team convincingly seven days earlier but Carnforth started in perfect fashion with Mathew Short scoring under the posts after good work from captain Dan Blenkharn and Jack Edmondson with Edmondson converting.

Five minutes later a Sam Tomlinson run set up a scrum 10 yards out with Blenkharn picking up after the drive to score with Edmondson again adding the extras.

Another break by the skipper 20 minutes in saw Short go over for his second try with Edmondson taking the score to 21.

Preston didn’t let their heads drop however and pounced from a line out five metres out to score with the conversion from wide out going over.

On the stroke of half-time flanker Donald Haddow was able to turnover the ball allowing Short to complete a first-half hat-trick with another excellent break as Carnforth went into the break 28-7 to the good.

There was no let up from the visitors after the break, Blenkharn taking the ball from a scrum before sprinting 30 yards for his second try.

Preston hit back with a drop goal before Carnforth made it six of the best.

Jason Short made a superb break up the field, Kevin Hardy took the ball wide before off-loading inside to Edmondson who cut back to score a try and also converted the two points.

The hosts refused to buckle and their reward came from another well-worked forwards’ try with five minutes remaining.

Carnforth had the final say however, Short, Edmondson and Lowrie linking up before winger Kieron Morgan finished the move with a try in the corner.
