Busy time for Lancaster and Morecambe runners

Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club runners have been busy on the roads with races ranging from 5k to the marathon.

At the Fishwick five-mile trail race in Preston Lauren Gora ran strongly to take second women’s place in a time of 37m.15 for 18th overall.

Crossing the line together in a very respectable 44m.53 were Steve Perry and his granddaughter Shannon.

The Levens 10k saw Ray Edgar come a close second in 33m.58 while David Wilkinson ran well in 47m.59, with Emily Stapleton next in 49m.53 and Carole Wilkinson in 52m.23.

The popular Lancaster 5k Saturday night race series returned last weekend with a great turnout of local runners.

First across the line was Calvin Routledge in 17m.49 to finish 15th overall.

It was the club’s ladies who really dominated the event taking first three prizes with Maria Snell first in 18m.26, Jayne Perry second with a personal best of 19m.00 and Hannah Bateson third in 19m.38.

Emily Stapleton was first veteran 40 in 22m.56 and Linda Stapleton was first veteran 65 in 31m.02.

Other finishers were Ken Earnshaw 21m.04, Vicky Holgate 25m.38, Jon Tibke 26m.05, Cheryl O’Neill 26m.55, Rachael Bland 27m.36, Louise Goddard 27m.36, John McGann 33m.13, Richard Stapleton 33m.45, Susan MGann 37m.14.

At the Edinburgh Marathon Karen Davis enjoyed her first marathon, with a strong run in the second half seeing her cross the line with Bill Gardner in a time of 5h.52.40.

The weekend before Lancaster & Morecambe AC runner Mark Gardner took part in the world’s most famous one mile race the Westminster Bupa Mile which starts and finishes on The Mall.

Mark’s time of 4m.42 placed him a superb sixth in a field of more than 1,000 runners.

Lancaster and Morecambe also fielded a team at the British Championships on bank holiday Monday, May 30, held as part of the London 10,000.

First back was Henry Chan, who ran strongly to finish in 33m.57 and place 116th overal.

David Brown ran a solid time of 34m.18, Steve Worthington composed a well-paced race to finish in 34m.21, Mark Gardner ran well after his effort’s the previous day and crossed the line with his sister Louise, with them running 37m.27 and 37m.45 respectively.

The club also had a group in action at the Manchester Terry Nortley 2 miles Road Relay.

Raymond Edgar and James Dalgleish were on the first leg, the former bringing the team home in first place in 10.29 with the fastest overall leg of the day, with James bringing the B team home in seventh place with a solid 11.55.

Next out for the A team was David Brown who extended the lead with an excellent 11.22.

Out for the B on second leg was Mark Gardner who brought the B team into fourth with a time of 11.29.

The A team had William Onek extend the lead even further on leg three with an excellent 11.06 while on third leg for the B team Gareth Woodcock held fourth position with a swift 12.27.

The final legs were run by Kev Wilson, A and Gavin Lloyd, B, with both giving their all to hold the team’s places.

Kev made light work of the course and finished with a credible 11.42 and bringing the team home to victory. Gavin ran a solid leg of 11.58 to put the B team in fourth place by more than a minute.
