The Morecambe featherweight stopped Belfast’s Marco McCullough in the eighth round to become the first fighter born in the town to win a major international title.

The undefeated 22-year-old said: “It was my destiny tonight.

“Lancaster and Morecambe’s got a new sporting hero.

“I don’t want to be big headed, I just want to do the town so proud.

“Tonight I have and I hope people have seen on Sky Sports Box Office that I put in the boxing of my life.

“I boxed out of my skin against a very tough lad.”

Lowe boxed almost to perfection as he picked off McCullough on the undercard of Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton’s huge unification fight before the Irishman’s corner threw in the towel after one minute and 56 seconds of the eighth session.

He said: “The gameplan went as it was supposed to and as it’s got to.

“I’ve got to listen to my trainers. I got him at the end like I thought I was going to.

“I picked him off early, he was tiring and it just worked.”

He said: “This opens everything up for me but I don’t want to rush things.

“I’m only 22, I want to learn and move into my weight.

“I can make this weight easy, so I want to to grow into and get stronger.

“I’ve told people all along that I can hit hard and it showed tonight.

“Let me develop into my weight and I’ll be a real threat.”

More than anything Lowe said the gravity of his achievement hadn’t sunk in.

He said: “It doesn’t feel real to be honest with you.

“All the work I’ve put in the gym since I was eight years old has been worth it.

“All these early mornings, not eating the food I want, not going out, training away from home, it’s all been for this belt.

“It means that much to me. If I never win another fight I’ve conquered my dream.”
