Trainer Jimmy Harrington: Isaac Lowe will do Morecambe proud

One of Isaac Lowe's trainers is confident the Westgate Warrior will 'do Morecambe proud' and lift the Commonwealth featherweight title.

Jimmy Harrington, along with fellow corner man Dave Hulley, will lead Lowe into battle when he faces Marco McCullough on the undercard of Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton’s world title unification fight on February 27.

It will be the third fight Lowe has had under the tutelage of the Doncaster pair and Harrington believes Morecambe’s unbeaten English champion is going from strength to strength.

He said: “He’s a lot more disciplined and listens more.

“He’s maturing as a man, is a really straight fella and is nice to be around.

“He’s enthusiastic in the gym and is never late.

“It’s a big attribute for a boxer not to get above their station.

“He’s a cracking lad who deserves to reach his potential and in the coming years he will do Morecambe proud.”

Harrrington and Hulley previously guided the World and European champion McDonnell twins, Jamie and Gavin, and that is how Lowe came to join them at Freedom Boxing Club, their gym in a prison-owned building on the site of HM Lindholme.

The Morecambe man’s long-time trainer Bob Howard, formerly of Lancaster Boxing Academy, also remains an integral part of Team Lowe and will be in the corner on fight night.

Harrington said: “We first met Isaac about a year ago when he came sparring with the McDonnells.

“We got to know him from there.

“He’s got family in Doncaster and he enjoyed being with us and we enjoyed working with him.

“We’ve still got plenty of contact with Bob though and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“He’s still a big part of the team.”

Working with the likes of the McDonnells, who have now moved onto pastures new with Rotherham-based Dave Coldwell, means that Harrington and Hulley have been part of some big fight nights.

They were the masterminds when Jamie beat Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat to lift the WBA World Bantamweight title on the Carl Froch-George Groves undercard at Wembley Stadium back in May 2014.

Harrington said: “We’re the forgotten men of training.

“We’ve had world champions and European champions and been on some massive shows like Froch-Groves one and two.

“I went over to Texas for the (Tomoki) Kameda fight (when Jamie McDonnell defended his title) as well.

“Isaac’s got great people around him.”

Most observers are struggling to split, Lowe, 10-0-1 as a professional, and Frampton stablemate McCullough, 14-2.

Harrington however has full confidence in his man and believes he can win the fight in several different ways.

He said: “Everyone’s billing it as a 50-50 and that’s what you want on these big pay-per-view shows.

“We’ve got a gameplan and we’ll be sticking to it to the letter.

“But that doesn’t mean we’ve not got a plan B, C, D, E and F.

“There isn’t just one way Isaac can win and my only prediction is that he will.

“By hook or by crook, however it comes, he’ll win.

“If he has to grind it out he’s done the necessary graft but he’s also got the power to knock him out.

“Morecambe will have a new Commonwealth champion.”
