Boxing: Doey through to semi-finals

Skerton Boxing Club were out and about at the weekend with the club being represented in the Youth Championships in Walden and on a club show in Manchester.

On Saturday morning Mathew Doey was in the quarter-finals of the Youth Championships boxing a very experienced boxer from Preston and Fullwood boxing club, Alex Hall.

Doey showed skill beyond his years from the very first bell, putting Hall under serious pressure and in the second round he upped it further.

The Skerton fighter pushed his opponent back in the third round and his hand was raised as the unanimous winner.

The club then moved on to Jimmy Egan’s boxing show in Wythenshawe in the evening.

First saw the impressive and highly-rated William Birchall step in to the ring. From the first bell until the last Birchall commanded the centre of the ring and his hand was raised as a unanimous winner.

Next to step into the ring in his first competitive bout for the club was Luke Gudgeon.

From round one he stood toe-to-toe with his more experienced opponent for the full three rounds but he just lost out on a split decision.
