Skerton Boxing Club have had another busy weekend on the amateur circuit.

On Friday night the club travelled to Wigan with six boxers in action.

Two of the club’s younger boxers were up first against boxers from Leigh ABC, 10-year-olds Nelson Birchall and Frank Varey winning unanimous decisions.

Niall Doherty, 18, was another unanimous winner, this time against a boxer from the army.

Heavy-punching Lancaster prospect Marcin Lewicki, 19, was next up to face an army fighter and made it four decision wins out of four for the Morecambe-based club.

There was also split decision wins on the night for Martin Baird and Sean Coxon.

On Saturday, the action moved to Walkden for the Youth Championship finals where Matthew Doey from Skerton was boxing in the final against a three-time national champion and England representative Bradley Rae.

Rea from St Johns ABC in Manchester was in his 56th bout with Doey in only his 15th.

It was always going to be a tough ask but Doey battled hard in a titanic contest with both boxers receiving a standing ovation as Rae was announced as the winner via a split decision.

William Birchall was next in for the club and had a very rare day off as he lost a split decision.

Joey Robb, 11, got the club back to winning ways with a unanimous victory before his twin brother Danny was not to be outdone and won with a dazzling display.

The club will be showcasing their boxers on a show to be held at the Globe Arena on Friday, March 13. Call Paul Fielding on 077666 55401 for tickets.
