Athletics: Lancaster and Morecambe’s Jayne storms to victory

Lancaster Race Series held the first ever Run Girl Run events with several local runners took part.

Clear winner of the 10k race was Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club’s Jayne Perry, who finished ahead of second place by almost four minutes with a fine solo effort of 41m.43.

Next for the club was Claire Greenwood in 55m.04, followed by Michelle Whitton in 59m.35, with Karen Davis and Susan McGann finishing together in 1h.20.12.

The club had one runner in the 5km race, with Sally Richardson running 44m.19.

There was a fantastic number of performances by the club’s athletes at the Catforth 5k and leading the way was Raymond Edgar who posted a superb time of 15m.33 to take second.

Ray was well backed up by team mates William Onek who flew round in 16m.16 to finish third and Mark Leadbetter ran strongly to finish eighth in 17m.10.

The club’s women weren’t to be outdone and Carolyne Baxter took the victory with a fantastic effort of 18m.03, with Maria Snell finishing in second place with a super 18m.36.

Jayne Perry was first veteran 35 with a good run of 19m.29, followed by Helen Booth in 19m.54 and Steve Perry in 21m.12.

The Prudent Riverside half marathon held from the George & Dragon pub on the quay in Lancaster attracted more than 120 runners and first back for the local club was Phil Lowery who ran an excellent time of 1h.20.50 to finish fourth. Next was Helena Lewis in 1h.52.54, followed by Niamh Lewis in 1h.55.52.

Lancaster and Morecambe also took victory at the Self Transcendence relays in London.

The 3 x 1 mile event was held in Battersea Park – Mark Gardner ran a strong second half to record 4m.41, the third fastest time of the day. David Brown was next off and he ran a solid 4m.58 to keep the team in contention.

Isaac Scott was on anchor leg and he cruised round to finish in 4m.46 and ensure the team crossed the line in first.
