Goodbye Sammy

A FOND goodbye and everlasting gratitude to Sammy McIlroy and Mark Lillis.

The coverage in last week’s Visitor was bang on the button.

The small few who booed Sammy’s name were most probably the same ones who sang his praises after that tremendous win at Wembley against Exeter City to win Football League status.

We’d never beaten Exeter before and never since but that day was Morecambe FC’s, and Sammy and Mark led us to the promised land.

Over the years I’ve watched the Shrimps play teams called Guinness Exports, Leyland Motors, Prescot Cables and Horwich Railway Men’s Institute. Just think where we could be.

Next season we will host such new names as Swindon Town, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and of course a club who are our best of enemies, Tony Roberts’ Dagenham and Redbridge.

I’m delighted that Jim Bentley has been given the job to steer the ship. Jim may think he’s a Scouser but we’ve adopted him as a honorary Morecambrian. He’s already a legend as a player and here’s hoping he can Bring Us Sunshine as our new manager.
