Tragic and disgraceful as the desecration of Eric Morecambe’s statue is, perhaps it is a good time to rethink what should actually be there.
As Ulverston has a Laurel and Hardy statue (Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston), why cannot we have a Morecambe and Wise statue?
Because, let’s face it, Eric Morecambe would have been virtually unknown without his straight man, Ernie Wise.
So I’m proposing a new Ernie Wise statue (done by the same sculptor in the same style) to accompany his old time friend and sited together with Eric in the same place on the promenade.
I’ve always thought Eric looked lonely anyway, and not quite right on his own without Ernie.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Sculptor Graham Ibbeson has said there are no plans for an Ernie Wise statue, but he is working on a life-sized bronze relief of Morecambe and Wise for elsewhere on the Promenade.
