I refer to your newspaper item concerning Mr John Wilkinson, our local bird man. I was rather saddened to read that he is to be prosecuted yet again and perhaps sent to jail once again depending on, I assume, how our local magistrates view his care.
He appears to be a rather sad, lonely old gentleman whose main purpose in life seems to be feeding his birds.
His crime, and it is a crime, seems to be very minor compared to most of the much more serious crimes that fill some of the pages of the newspaper each week.
Yes he breaks the law and is a severe nuisance to his neighbours, but he pays a heavy price for his dedication to wild birds – witness the state of the outside of his home, an example of the attitude of some people towards him.
I sincerely hope that our local judiciary can view his case with a little more human compassion than last time. He deserves to be helped, not treated as a criminal.
