UNSUNG HERO sponsored by Specsavers

Anna Krelle

“For 45 years Anna, who runs a charity shop in the West End of Morecambe, has collected for the 345 Squad Lancaster Air Cadets, for more than 20 years she has collected for the Derian House Children’s Hospice and is now also collecting for the Alzheimers awareness project at Lancaster University, to which she recently gave a cheque for £1,000.”

Barbara Mortensen

“This autumn Barbara will have done 20 years as a lollipop lady outside Poulton-le-Sands school. She loves the job she does, knows all the children and has helped children from primary school through to and including high school. Mums know if they send their children to school on their own they will be safe on that part of their journey.”

John and Dorothy McKenzie

“John and Dorothy run Bare Chemists on Princes Crescent. I would like to nominate them for all their efforts in promoting the Crescent as a traditional village street to shop local, and for helping to organise the annual Barefest festival.”

Please note: John and Dorothy have asked us to thank those who nominated them, but they have decided to withdraw from the competition.

COMMUNITY GROUP sponsored by Costain

West End Impact

“Their contribution last year was amazing. They helped 350 Morecambe people with rehousing, drug and alcohol problems, and food shortage. Michl and Tracy Kohl who run it are pioneers in the area. Lots of people in Morecambe have a brighter future because of them.”

Talking newspapers volunteers at Galloway’s Society for the Blind

“The service is run completely by volunteers who selflessly give up their time to ensure that visually impaired people living within the local area are able to keep up to date with what is going on in their local communities.”

Staff at Welcome Cafe

“They have raised hundreds of pounds for charity with their book and bake sales, raising money for a defibrilator which has saved lives in the Arndale Centre.”

Dave Chisnall

“‘Chizzy’ is ranked in the Top 10 darts players in the world, plays in the weekly Premier League on Sky TV and reached the final of the televised Grand Slam of Darts. He plays at the highest level in the big arenas but also supports the local competitions in the smaller venues, playing when his time allows on the Morecambe darts scene.”

Frank Wilkinson

“A former Morecambe Cricket Club vice-captain, wicket-keeper and opening batsman, who has coached hundreds of youngsters through their junior years on to the senior game. He has been coaching at Morecambe for more than 40 years and 18 years for Heysham Cricket Club Juniors.”

Morecambe Ladies Football Team

“The most successful ladies football team in the area. The club has earned promotion for the last four years and now boasts two teams. The reserves play in Lancashire FA Women’s League Division 1 and the first team in the Women’s Premier League having been promoted last year, after winning the cup and league double. The ladies also reached the FA Cup 3rd round and the Lancashire Cup Final.”
