DESERVING people who have helped put the sunshine back into Morecambe have been nominated in our 2013 Sunshine Awards.

And now it’s down to you to choose our winners.

Over the past few weeks, we have been gathering nominations in our reader community awards.

Now we can reveal the short-list of three in each of the reader categories.

All of the nominees will be invited to the 2013 Sunshine Ball and dinner at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe on Friday, May 10, where the winners will be announced.

Here is the list of nominees, along with endorsements from the readers who nominated them.

For the UNSUNG HERO award

Shane Johnstone, community artist

“A truly great and generous man...his community art projects are amazing and his understated work in schools, as well as his maintenance of the Eric Morecambe statue, really should be recognised.”

Emma Hamilton, West End Impact

“A kind and lovely person who gives up her time to help others whatever the situation...from homeless people to those suffering with mental health issues..someone who thinks of others before herself.”

Jean Farnell

“She is 81 and disabled, but it does not stop her helping people out. She raises money for Cystic Fibrosis, Save-a-Pet and Wolfwood to mention a few, and at the moment is working on knitting hats, scarves and blankets for the homeless and collects stamps for retired horses and donkeys.”

For the COMMUNITY GROUP award:

Friends of the Winter Gardens

“A group of dedicated volunteers who love Morecambe’s old theatre and have done so much to keep it in the public eye and raise money for its restoration.”

Morecambe Bay Foodbank

“A new charity based at the former Central Methodist Church who collect food and drink then distribute it to those in need in the Poulton area.”

Homestart Morecambe and Lancaster

“I think the staff from Homestart make a positive difference to the community on a shoestring budget. Last Christmas they even helped provide Christmas presents for families who couldn’t even afford to live, let alone buy presents.”

For the SPORT award:

Scott Thornton, football coach of Morecambe Hawks under 13s

“Scott has always been patient, supportive and encouraging. He always thinks about others, helping kids to enjoy playing the game and teaching them values and respect. He also helps out coaching at Trumacar school.”

Mark Drinkall, Torrisholme Cricket Club

“Mark has been a player, captain, coach and chair of this club for more years than I can count. He is constanly raising money through bag packing, fronting lottery and Sport England bids...and passing on his passion and skills to the younger club members.”

Sophie Fish, Morecambe Ladies Football Club

“Sophie founded and now co-runs and plays for Morecambe Ladies FC, who are based at Lancaster and Morecambe College. The club are on track for back-to-back promotions as they continue to rise up the women’s football pyramid, and this is hugely down to Sophie’s hard work.”

For the ENTERTAINMENT award:

Cameron Seddon, Musician, events organiser, music teacher and DJ

“He has been a big part of managing the entertainment and music for Barefest and Christmas on the Crescent (in Bare) for the past three years...he also organised a wartime music event for older members of the community.”

Ivan Harrison, promoter of the Nice ‘n’ Sleazy punk festival

“Ivan has carried on the spirit of the Morecambe Punk Festival through his annual punk music festival at the Trimpell which attracts punk fans from far and wide. He finished second last year and I think he deserves to win this year.”

Howard Rogerson and the Promenade Concert Orchestra

“Morecambe’s light music orchestra who entertain big crowds at the Platform with their regular concerts, founded and conducted by Howard who has twice been nominated for a Sunshine Award in the past.”
