If the weather is as glorious on the May Day bank holiday as it was for our launch event, then we’re in for one amazing weekend.

The sun shone brightly on the Midland hotel as The Visitor joined forces with fellow events organisers to launch Viva Morecambe - three big events on one huge weekend this coming May.

The Viva Morecambe weekend kicks off with our annual Sunshine Ball awards dinner at the Midland on Friday, May 2, where the guest of honour will be Gail Stuart, daughter of Eric Morecambe.

It continues with the Morecambe Variety Festival on May 3 and 4, taking the Winter Gardens theatre back to its old-time variety heyday with all kinds of weird and wonderful acts, shows and family entertainment. And to cap off the weekend, the Morecambe Carnival is returning for the first time in almost 15 years on Sunday, May 4.

The Visitor’s content editor Greg Lambert was joined by Neil Kendall, promoter of the Morecambe Variety Festival, and David and Carla Brayshaw, from the Morecambe Carnival committee, for the launch on Wednesday at the Midland.

Members of the Go Morecambe community group, set up to help and support festival organisers in Morecambe, were also on hand as were Danny Matthews and Amy Scarisbrick from The Bay radio, supporters of the Carnival.

We were also delighted to welcome ‘Minnie Mouse’ and ‘Donald Duck’, with costumes supplied by Fancy That fancy dress shop in Morecambe. Other guests included Amanda Cruse from Dotty’s Vintage and Ivan Harrison, promoter of the Nice ‘n’ Sleazy punk festival.

Brian Bromiley from Go Morecambe said: “I think it promises to be a weekend to remember and it will put Morecambe back on the map.”

Keep your eye on The Visitor and our website for more on the Viva Morecambe weekend and the Sunshine Ball.

We will be announcing the shortlist for this year’s Sunshine Awards in next week’s Visitor.
