VIDEO: Lancaster mayor steps into the boxing ring

Councillor Jon Barry donned the gloves for a spot of boxing while on a visit to a Morecambe community centre.

The first ever Green mayor of our district was shown the ropes by boxing coach Frank Harrington at the Red Rose club on West End Road.

And during a spirited session on the pads, Coun Barry unleashed a stiff left jab and a nifty right cross!

Afterwards Coun Barry, who is the chairman of town hall meetings, tweeted: “I’m thinking of employing this as a new method of controlling councillors.”

Coun Barry was a guest at the Red Rose Community Centre open day on Saturday.

The club has been praised for getting kids off the streets to learn boxing.

The facility also has a gym, dance and fitness studio, and martial arts area.
