A home has been found for a new Eric and Ernie landmark in our town as the ‘Morecambe Gets Wise’ campaign gathers pace.
The gardens next to the Midland hotel will house a bronze relief of the comedy double act created by Eric Morecambe statue sculptor Graham Ibbeson.
Campaigners are trying to raise £50,000 to pay for the Morecambe and Wise wall art, which will be a brand new tourist attraction for the resort.
Football supporters helped pump money into the coffers by buying limited edition Eric Morecambe rosettes at Saturday’s match between the Shrimps and Luton Town.
Further fundraising events are planned for 2015.
Meanwhile there is a smile on the face of Morecambe once again after the return of the Eric statue after repairs.
The sculpture was vandalised in a hacksaw attack on October 11 but returned on Thursday despite fears over the ‘weather bomb’ which struck the country.
Mr Ibbeson said afterwards: “I’m really relieved. There were a few moments when he started swaying in the wind, then there was hail, and everybody was cold, but then it all fell into place and I knew I could relax.”
Then Eric’s family visited the statue in the afternoon.
Coun Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism, said: “Morecambe hasn’t felt quite the same without Eric and it’s as if Christmas has come early.”
