Chancellor George Osborne was taken on a tour of Lancaster Brewery today, Friday, as part of a whistle stop visit to businesses in north Lancashire.

Mr Osborne, MP for Tatton, Cheshire, praised the brewery, based at Lancaster Leisure Park, in Wyresdale Road, for its recent move into the American export market.

He said that businesses like the brewery were the key to the country’s economic success, and for too long the UK had been relying on importing goods.

The chancellor also visited DST Group Ltd on the White Lund Industrial Estate, and Princes Crescent, in Bare, where he talked to small business owners.

Mr Osborne pledged to help small businesses with £1,000 subsidies on business rates, and also cash back on job creation.

He also said that the government’s support for the Heysham M6 Link Road was proof that the focus was just as much on the north of the country as it was on the south in terms of boosting the economy.

On the £300m of cuts to Lancashire County Council’s budget by 2016, he said: “As a country we have to make sure we live within our means.

“We’re spending more than we are getting in.

“We’ve had to take difficult decision, but it’s up to the local council to see where it can save money.

“They need to think long and hard about cutting front line services if they’ve still got too much waste in their back offices.”
