Weather warnings issued for Lancaster over coming days as Storm Christoph hits UK

The Met Office says that spells of prolonged and heavy rain may lead to flooding and disruption to travel in some areas of the district, while an Amber National Severe Weather Warning for rain has been issued for parts of northern, central and eastern England.

The Caton area has both a yellow and amber warning in place, while the Bentham area has been given an amber warning.

Galgate has a yellow weather warning in place.

For areas issued with an amber warning, heavy rainfall combined with some snowmelt across the hills is likely to lead to flooding.

The Environment Agency has not yet issued any flood warnings for the Lancaster area, but heavy rain is forecast from tonight, Monday January 18, until Wednesday January 20.

A spokesperson for Lancaster City Council said: "We're checking flooding hot spots in the district and clearing debris from the highway that could end up blocking gullies.

"Our teams will be on standby to deal with any further clean-up operations which may be required.

"More information on the weather warnings which have been issued can be found here and the Flood Hub has advice on how to prepare for possible flooding."

The Amber warning area includes parts of Lancashire and North Yorkshire, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Wakefield, Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester and Peterborough and is valid from 6am on Tuesday through to midday on Thursday.
