NHS England figures announced today, April 27, show that two more people have died from coronavirus at Morecambe Bay Hospitals, bringing the total to 144.

But the trust said it had discharged 223 people after they were treated for Covid-19 across its hospitals.

The majority of people who contract the disease do not need hospital treatment.

The trust said: "Our NHS and care colleagues couldn't get through the coronavirus pandemic without the fabulous support from local people, businesses, fundraisers and volunteers.

"We're working hard to do our very best, and your kindness means everything."

The way deaths are announced nationally has now changed, and as a result only trust-wide figures are being released by NHS England.

The trust includes the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal and Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

There is a delay in reporting the figures which means that each death is not reported by the NHS on the following day.

The new statistics include patients who died in hospital - but not other places, such as care homes.

Health chiefs across Morecambe Bay are urging people not to put off getting help when they need it.

The trust has seen a 66 per cent drop in people attending A&E in April 2020, compared to April 2019.

The message is: “we’re open, let us help you”.

There is a worry that people are putting themselves or their loved ones at risk by not seeking urgent help when it’s needed.
