Lasers, DJs, smoke machines and VIP booths still feature at Lancaster nightclub

Glow Nightclub in Mary Street re-opened over the bank holiday weekend, reducing its capacity from 900 to 250 in line with government guidelines.

Paul Roberts, general manager at the nightclub, said things had changed quite a lot.

He said: "We shut down in March, but we've had zero backing from the government.

"We've had furlough which has helped keep the management team.

"Luckily we had some savings for the rent, but it's not been easy.

"We relaunched as a late bar on Bank Holiday Sunday and it was successful.

We have a new capacity of 250.

"This is compared to our previous capacity of 900 people so things have changed quite a lot."

The club is currently open on Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm until 4am.

Paul said the re-opening was successful, and he now hoped to extend opening times to Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday as students return to the city.

He said: "We've had a refurb, and it's darker, and still feels like a full on nightclub.

"When you come here it's still dark, there's a haze of smoke, lasers and VIP booths, so it's got that kind of club feel, but people have to sit with their group.

"People can still get dressed up and enjoy themselves."

Paul reported no major incidents since the club re-opened.

"I can't believe how smoothly it's run in terms of the Covid-19 restrictions," he said.

"The local authority, environmental health and police have been great.

"The only people that have let us down are the government."

Paul, 31, who has been in the hospitality industry since leaving school, added that the changes had brought club owners together who were sharing advice and safety documents.
