He attended Middlesex University and moved to London where he spent 20 years working in public relations.

He bought the Tower House in 2011, converting it into a guest house and art and antiques gallery.

He was actively opposed to the Heysham M6 Link Road, and famously rode through the village dressed as Lady Godiva in protest against the northern route.

Mandi Davidson, Jonathan’s cousin said: “From a young age Jonathan was one on his own - certainly did not follow the crowd, quite eccentric in some ways but never afraid to be himself.

“Spoke his mind and lived life the way he wanted to regardless of other peoples’ opinions. He was passionate about politics and anything close to his heart, very generous and sometimes very pig headed - I’m sure he’d agree with that! I will certainly miss our sometimes heated debates and I’ll miss him full stop.”

Janice Leeming said on Facebook: “A star that burned very bright indeed during the good times. RIP dear friend.”

Jessica Owen said: “JE was a wonderful character that brought a lot of laughter and cheer into everyone’s lives.”

According to friends of Mr Edwards’ family, he died from a “combination of peritonitis, ulcer perforation, meningitis and septicaemia”.

His funeral was held on Monday, May 23, at Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium and his family asked for donations to be made to St John’s Hospice.
