AN exhibition set up as a tribute to a photographer who amassed a collection of 50,000 slides during his lifetime is on show in Lancaster until August 27.

The display at the Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park had been arranged before Fred Johnstone’s death in January aged 86, but his stepdaughter Rita Warren, who is also known as Joy, decided to press ahead with the plans and make it a posthumous celebration of his life and work.

Fred, who lived in Goodwood Avenue, Slyne and was an honorary president of the Lancaster and Morecambe Photographic Society, began taking photographs in 1938 as a way of recording his travels.
