Travelodge work causes power cut

SHOPS and businesses in Morecambe town centre were plunged into darkness on Tuesday afternoon by a power cut - believed to be caused by workmen building the new Travelodge hotel.

Many had to close up early for the day after the electricity went off at around 2.45pm affecting around 120 properties.

Engineers were on site late on Tuesday afternoon trying to fix the fault.

A spokesman from Electricity North West said the problem was caused when contractors working on the new Travelodge on Euston Road cut through an underground cable. He said engineers hoped to reconnect the supply by 5.30pm.

Lighting in the Arndale went off as did electricity in all the shops on one side of the shopping centre. On the opposite side, only Shoe Zone was affected.

Many shops on Euston Road and Victoria Street were also cut off and forced to close early.
