THREE railway level crossings in the Morecambe area are to be completely renewed and upgraded by Network Rail in a £5m project.
The crossings at Hest Bank and Bolton-le-Sands on the West Coast Main Line, and at Bare Lane station all have equipment dating from the 1970s and need to be brought up to date.
Although perfectly safe, once renewed they will meet the latest standards for both railway and road use, said the national rail infrastructure firm.
The upgrading will also lead to an improvement in the performance of trains on the main line and on the Morecambe branch.
Preparatory work started on the crossing outside Bare Lane station last weekend and will continue this weekend, which means the B5275 (Bare Lane) will be closed from 10pm on Saturday until 11am on Sunday.
