Mark Cullinan, current chief executive, is due to retire in 2016.

The council has explored several options – to retain the post, share a chief executive with another local authority, or operate without one altogether.

The council’s personnel committee has since recommended that a new chief executive should be appointed after Mr Cullinan leaves.

If the council votes to agree with this, a special committee of councillors will then be set up.

Their task will be to recommend a candidate for the approval of the full council.
