Tide bell talks due for Morecambe Bay

These musical bells strike in time with the rise of water at high tides.

Time and Tide bells are installed at Appledore, Devon, Bosta beach Gt. Bernera, Outer Hebrides, Trinity Buoy Wharf, London and Aberdyfi, Wales.

The Morecambe Artist Colony, a newly-formed group of local artists, will host a public meeting on Tuesday, November 10 to discuss a bell being sited in the Morecambe Bay area.

The Time and Tide bell project is the brainchild of Devon-based sculptor and musician Marcus Vergette. Marcus will be coming to The Hothouse, home of More Music, to talk about the scheme.

Played by the movement of the waves, the bell creates a varying, gentle, musical pattern.

Other bells are planned for Orford Ness in Suffolk and Aberdeen.

Talks are in their early stages and there have been no formal proposals given to Lancaster City Council on the scheme as yet.

Coun Janice Hanson, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “An invitation to attend a public meeting in relation to this has been received by the council and an officer has been tasked to advise on the technical and environmental issues of any such proposal.

“It should be stressed however that the area of Morecambe Bay within the remit of the city council is an area heavily protected by national and international environmental legislation and any proposal to site permanent structures at the high tide line will have to take account of these constraints.”

The meeting will start at 7.30pm at the Hothouse on Devonshire Road, Morecambe. All welcome.
