Thank you to heroes who saved Morecambe golfer

Geoff Suthers, at Morecambe Golf Club. The 63-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing in a golfing competition, he was saved by his fellow players.

Family of Geoff Suthers say they don’t know how to thank the men who acted quickly after the 63-year-old went into a cardiac arrest.

Geoff collapsed as he took his second shot at Morecambe Golf Club.

Kristian Barwell, Adam Barwell, Mark Leaver, Jon Hunt and Stephen Rawes performed 10 minutes of CPR, on Geoff before emergency services arrived.

Sarah Suthers said: “The guys were close by and recognised what was happening straight away. They’d seen his defibrillator bouncing in his chest, they are all trained in first aid.

“They are my daddy’s angels.

“He is lucky to be alive, he shouldn’t be but he is thanks to those guys. You can’t put a price on the cost of life. I don’t know how to thank them.”

The father-of-three suffered three broken ribs from the CPR and was showing no signs of life when he was shocked four times by emergency services. He was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and later Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

This isn’t the first time Geoff has battled for his life. He has had two heart attacks in the last 10 years.

His first took place when he was driving on the M62 towards Liverpool. Luckily he was near Broad Green Hospital at the time.

Doctors later told Geoff, 80 per cent of people don’t survive a cardiac arrest of this kind.

A cardiac arrest is different to a heart attack as it occurs when the heart stops beating unexpectedly.

Geoff has pacemakers and a defibrillator fitted inside his body but the pressure of attacks has left his heart in a “horrific state”.

Sarah said: “My dad is now on the transplant list, he doesn’t want to be on his own. It is a very unique situation, most people don’t survive. I only hope they can find a new heart for my dad.”

Geoff’s wife, Christine, said: “I have done CPR training but I am not strong enough. Those guys who saved him are. We are on tenderhooks at home but I am so grateful for the boys and the staff at Morecambe Golf Club. He had excellent care in hospital.”
