Thank you to everybody who voted for our Sunshine Award winners.

We received a record number of votes this year.

The winners of our four reader awards will be announced on Friday, May 2 at The Visitor’s annual Sunshine Ball at the Midland Hotel.

The nominees are as follows, each with a quote from the readers who nominated them.

UNSUNG HERO AWARD - The nominees are...

David Brayshaw

“David has ploughed so much time and effort into bringing back the Morecambe Carnival. He was the one who took the first step and followed it through. He has pulled everybody together, despite many obstacles in his path.”

Annette Smith

“As co-ordinator of the Morecambe Foodbank, Annette as been instrumental in setting up and maintaining the Foodbank despite facing significant health challenges in her personal life.”

Eileen Thomas-Woodhouse

“Eileen is a volunteer for the breast feeding network. She visits Balmoral, Poulton and Westgate Children’s Centres every week, talking to mums-to-be about breastfeeding. She is a volunteer on the RLI helping mums to breastfeed. She is also a volunteer for Operation Christmas Child (the shoebox appeal).”

COMMUNITY GROUP - The nominees are...

Morecambe and District Anglers

“This is the only (angling club) in the area run by volunteers just for the use of children between the age of eight and 16. They teach angling, run matches and have an annual holiday for the kids. All the children are from the local area and live in deprived areas.”

Go Morecambe

“This group of volunteers work tirelessly to organise events in Morecambe and they give freely of their own time to man these events. They are the go-to group when anyone needs volunteers to help out.”

Morecambe Bay Foodbank

“The Foodbank does a brilliant job of not just getting food to people who need it most but offering them some personal contact and support.”

SPORT AWARD - The nominees are...

Ken Richardson

“Ken is a stalwart of local table tennis. He coaches some of the rising young stars of table tennis at local schools, was a torch bearer for the London Olympic Games in 2012, and still himself plays in the local league.”

Jim Bentley

“As manager of Morecambe FC, Jim has done wonders keeping our little town team in the football league for so long and on a meagre budget and poor support. Jim was also the captain of the Shrimps when they won promotion at Wembley in 2007.”

Graham Hicks

“Graham finished a career-best second in Britain’s Strongest Man despite only having been in strongman competitions for a few years. He is in Los Angeles competing in his third World’s Strongest Man, representing the Morecambe area with pride.”

ENTERTAINMENT AWARD - The nominees are...

Steve Middlesbrough

“Steve deserves recognition for the years of work he has put in in Morecambe to put on free festivals. One of Morecambe’s longest-serving club, party and function DJs and music promoters whose cheerful enthusiasm and passion for the town is obvious.”

The Nice ‘n’ Sleazy Punk Festival

“This is a fantastic local and family event that brings in lots of visitors. It’s run by great people at a great venue (the Trimpell Club) and brings great publicity for Morecambe. I love the range of punk, ska and sometimes comedy that you get to see.”

Howard Rogerson

“Howard is an exceptional musician and conductor. His orchestra (the Morecambe Promenade Concert Orchestra) is wonderful. He is a happy, jovial man and a true gentleman. His concerts at The Platform are very popular with local people and draw light music enthusiasts to Morecambe. And it will be the fourth time he has been nominated!”

Other awards to be presented on the night are the Ambassador Award, this year to be given posthumously to Eric Morecambe. The award will be accepted by his daughter Gail Stuart.

We will also crown the winner of our Sunshine Business Award, determined by our panel. The short list is Promenade Music, Battersbys Coaches and Gerry’s Fishing Tackle.

Tickets to the Sunshine Ball, sponsored by Wright and Lord Solicitors, are now SOLD OUT.
