Students hailed for their fantastic community work

Lancaster and Morecambe College recently hosted their annual Volunteer Awards.

The scheme was made to recognise and celebrate all the fantastic work the students do at college and in the community.

The event started in 2007, this year being their eighth annual awards ceremony.

Danny Matthews from The Bay Radio presented the awards alongside David Wood, college principal, who congratulated the students for their determination to work and help others, handing out certificates and trophies.

There were a number of certificates given out ranging from bronze to gold, as well as three special achievement awards, given to those students who contributed to an exceptional level for the college as well as the community.

The ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Contribution’ Awards were then given to two extraordinary students showing unprecedented enthusiasm, generously giving their time to aid others, displaying their great commitment.

Recipients of the Special Achievement Award included:

*Beverley Williamson, nominated for her dedication and contribution to the Student Council and particularly for her help and support in the organisation and running of this year’s joint culture festival.

*Hannah Williamson, for an amazing 290 hours of volunteering, contributing to sport.

*Josh Dent, for his brilliant efforts volunteering to coach children both locally and abroad amounting a total of 325 hours.

Tara Kenyon was hailed Volunteer of the Year. After finishing her HND in public services, Tara took the time to help other students.

Finally, Catherine Huddleston was given the Outstanding Contribution Award in recognition for her four years of service as a Students’ Union communications officer and her contribution this year to the running of the Students’ Union.
