Lancaster Guardian and The Visitor Editor Nicola Adam is tackling a 10k mud-filled military assault course to raise money for the #saveourhospice appeal.

Nicola will be heading to Lowther Castle in Cumbria on Saturday as part of the Fitness Formation Warriors team, who are bidding to raise thousands of pounds for the newspaper’s campaign to save St John’s Hospice in Lancaster for future generations.

All staff and clients from Fitness Formation in the city centre, the team will be clambering through ice-filled skips and crawling through tunnels during the tough Born Survivor Reloaded event, which is billed as the ultimate military obstacle course.

The team have already been sponsored more than £5,000 and hope to raise thousands more. For Nicola the challenge is both personal and professional.

She said: “I feel very strongly about the #saveourhospice appeal and I am determined we will help St John’s tackle the financial deficit and ensure it exists for future generations.

“There are few people in this area whose lives have not been touched by the amazing work that goes on within the hospice itself and through Hospice at Home. We need them and they, more than ever, need us.

“My own mother died of breast cancer at a young age and she was helped by a hospice just like St John’s – entirely reliant on fundraising for running costs. So I’m partly doing it for her.

“I am absolutely terrified about this event. I’m recovering from a bad back – it is totally out of my comfort zone as I find that exercise generally makes me spill my wine!

“But Ryan Donohue and his team have been incredibly supportive in helping me train for this event. I even spotted a muscle in my arm the other day.

“If you haven’t sponsored either me or a member of the team, please do!”

Ryan said: “I am really proud of everyone taking part, they have all been training really hard and I have nothing but respect for their efforts.

“We are really determined to raise as much money as possible for the St John’s #saveourhospice appeal.”
