FUNDRAISERS on a charity cycle ride on the promenade were stunned when they received help from a most unexpected source – Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper!
Actor David Neilson, who plays the mild-mannered cafe boss in the nation’s favourite soap, joined in a 10-mile charity trek from the Strawberry Gardens pub at Heysham to the Venus and Cupid statue, completely out of the blue.
Mr Neilson then donated £10 to their chosen charity, Derian House children’s hospice.
The actor was in town to attend a wedding at the Midland Hotel on Saturday.
Glyn Ord, one of the cyclists, said: “One of the pub regulars, Michael Stanley, who everyone knows as ‘Stan’, had a stroke when he was 23.
“He was walking the route while the rest of us were cycling. Roy Cropper came towards him at the Eric Morecambe Statue and asked him what he was doing. Then he gave him a tenner and he and his wife walked with ‘Stan’ to the Broadway.
“He was brilliant, a really, really nice guy.”
The cycle ride was organised by the Strawberry Gardens.
The pub has raised over £27,000 for Derian House children’s hospice over several years of activities and hope the trek will push the total over the £30,000 mark.
Mr Neilson was also spotted sitting on a bench on the shore at Silverdale on Sunday afternoon.
Julia Haworth, who played Claire Peacock in Coronation Street, was also a guest at the wedding, believed to be for a scriptwriter from Manchester.
