RNLI lifeboat crew launched to report of man trapped in car at high tide

Launching from the causeway at Overton, the RNLI inshore lifeboat crew went to the search area but were unable to locate the man.

He was located north of Sunderland Point in the Middleton Sands area.

The lifeboat had begun to go to the revised search area when they were informed by the Coastguard that the man had been able to abandon his vehicle and was no longer in danger.

The lifeboat crew were stood down and returned to the station.

The incident happened at 1pm on Friday, January 23.

Morecambe RNLI volunteer Deputy Launching Authority, Colin Midwinter, said: “This incident illustrates the critical importance of people relaying accurate information when calling for assistance.

“The weather and visibility was poor and at present we are experiencing very high tides.

“The consequence of losing vital time searching in the wrong area could have been disastrous.

“Fortunately, on this occasion, it all ended well.”
