Chris Leadbetter, 64, passed away on Saturday, September 26 in Croatia.

He was elected as a Conservative councillor for Carnforth ward in May 2015, and had previously been a teacher at Our Lady’s Catholic College in Lancaster for 30 years before retiring to concentrate on his work as an examiner in 2002.

A spokesman for the Conservative group on Lancaster City Council said: “His untimely death occurred in Croatia whilst he and his wife were enjoying a Mediterranean cruise.

“Chris was proud to have been elected to represent the town and area that he loved and enjoyed living in so much for all of his adult life.

“Chris was born a Lancastrian though brought up in Cornwall.

“He returned to Lancashire in 1969 in order to go to college at St Martins - three wonderful years which made him want to stay in the Lancaster area. Chris met his wife at college and they moved into their first house, in Grosvenor Place in Carnforth in 1973.”

Many of the children Chris taught will remember him with great affection.

Chris was the treasurer of the Carnforth Area Regeneration Project (CARP) for a number of years and secretary of the Carnforth branch of the local Conservative association.

The spokesman added: “He was instrumental in organising the councillor surgeries that are held in Carnforth every month. Over the years Chris saw many people being helped with their problems and it was this ability to actually do something and improve Carnforth and the surrounding area that made him want to represent Carnforth as a councillor himself.”

Chris leaves his wife Liene, son and daughter-in-law and his new beloved grandson of six months.

His funeral will be held at the Crematorium at 1.5pm on October 14.
