PROUD residents of our district have been named amongst the 8,000 people who will carry the Olympic torch on its way to the Games in London.

The list of inspiring torch bearers who will represent the Lancaster and Morecambe area includes a former Miss Morecambe beauty queen and a student from Carnforth who has overcome health problems through sport.

They will each enjoy a stint carrying the torch when it wends its way through Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Hest Bank, Morecambe and Lancaster on Friday, June 22.

Laura Johnson, who won Miss Morecambe in 2006, was nominated for her four years of voluntary work with Lancashire police.

Matthew Prior, a student at Lancaster & Morecambe College, was nominated by his mum.

He was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder and epilepsy when he was five, but has not allowed his condition to stop him from completing his bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards.
