Pucker up for snogathon under clock at Carnforth Station

Three hundred passengers will take part in Britain's biggest snogathon on Sunday, July 22, under the iconic clock at Carnforth station where Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson kissed in the classic 1945 movie Brief Encounter.

They will be arriving aboard a special Northern Belle “Brief Encounter” train from Manchester and Huyton, Liverpool – many of them dressed in 1940s-style clothing.

A band will play wartime music for dancing on the platform of the restored station where the film was shot.

Couples who pucker up under the clock like “Alec” and “Laura” in Brief Encounter will be rewarded with a special Carnforth Kiss cocktail once back on the Northern Belle train.

General manager Jeanette Snape said: “I can’t reveal what is in the cocktail – that’s as closely-guarded a secret as Alec and Laura’s liaison. But I can promise it will taste sweet on the lips!”

Unlike Alec and Laura, however, passengers won’t have to make do with a cup of lukewarm British Rail tea and a half-stale curled ham sandwich in the buffet.

Instead a sumptuous seven-course lunch with wine will be served during the outward journey. Then there will be coffee, tea and petits fours n the way home, along with a table magician and strolling musicians to keep people entertained.

Sunday’s train will leave Manchester Victoria at 11.50am and Huyton at 12.35.
