£281k paid to city councillors

Twenty-five of the council’s 60 members earned the basic allowance only of £3,300, which rises to £3,350 this year.

The rest were paid additional responsibility allowances and travel and subsistence on top.

The highest amount paid, £14,582, went to council leader Coun Eileen Blamire, followed by £9,830 paid to deputy leader Coun Janice Hanson.

Cabinet members are paid £5,529 special responsibility allowance.

The next highest allowance of £3,570 was paid to both Coun Helen Helme as planning chairman and Coun Margaret Pattison as licensing regulatory chairman.

The highest travel and subsistence total claim of £349 was paid to ex-councillor Roger Dennison, with Ron Sands next with £323.25 and Margaret Pattison with £310.90.

A Lancaster City spokesman said that all travel and subsistence claims “relate to out of pocket travel and subsistence expenses and mileage claims incurred in relation to official council duties”.

Councillors receive a basic annual allowance to cover demands on their time such as council meetings, meetings with officers, constituents and official council business.

The allowance also covers costs such as the use of homes and private telephones.

Members’ allowances are considered periodically by the Lancaster City Council Independent Remuneration Panel.

The panel consists of up to seven independent people appointed by the council. The recommendations of the panel are then considered by the council.
