Sarah Neill, Cumbria co-ordinator for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue attended the scene at Sandside on Tuesday evening, April 4, and located the porpoise which had been stranded for quite some time.

She said: “We assessed the porpoise at the scene and deemed it in good body condition, responsive and with a good breathing rate so the decision was made to refloat.

“With help from the Arnside Coastguard and Lancaster Area Search and Rescue we transported the young porpoise to deeper water where we then restored the cetacean’s equilibrium.

“Following this the porpoise swam off strongly and off out into the distance, which was a great result.”
