In a speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street, Mr Cameron, he said: "It has been an honour to be Prime Minister for the last six years in this country but I don't think it is right for me to be the captain to steer our country to its next destination."

"This has been a democratic exercise, possibly the biggest in our history. The people of Great Britain have all had their say and I am proud of the fact that we trust the people with this decision. The people have voted to leave the European Union."

He went on to say that it "was right to ask the British people" and "their will must be respected".

Mr Cameron thanked everyone who had supported his 'Stay' campaign and congratulated the 'Leave' campaign for making their "spirited and passionate case".

"Across the world, people have watched the decision this country has made," he said. "I want to ensure everyone that the British economy is strong. We must now prepare for negotiations with the EU."

Mr Cameron went on to say that it would be the next Prime Minister who would negotiated with the EU. He revealed that he thought he should be officially replaced by the Conservative Party Conference in October and that the cabinet will meet on Monday.

Emotional, David Cameron finished by saying: "I love this country and feel honoured to have served it."
