The incident happened at St Mary Magdalene’s RC Primary in Wellfield Drive at around 8-20am as dozens of children, parents and staff were arriving for the day.

Police officers attended the scene and discovered a man who lives opposite the school trying to shoot a squirrel with an airgun. It is believed he was pointing the weapon from an upstairs window when someone spotted him and contacted the police.

A police spokesman said: “We have spoken to the man but no charges have been made. The situation was soon resolved but it did cause some panic and upset at the school.”
