Planned roadworks in the North West

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, September 19 and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Barthomley

Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6. The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit slip roads and the approach on the A500. Additional traffic lights will also be installed. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and the A500 and B5078 at different stages of the project. A temporary speed limit of 50mph is also in place, and the project is expected to be completed in December.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

A major project is taking place at Orrell Interchange, which will see extra lanes and traffic lights added to the junction with the M58 and the A577. The initial stage of work will require overnight closures of the link road between 10pm and 5am. The junction will remain open for vehicles travelling between the M6 and the M58, but a diversion will be in place for local traffic coming on or off the motorways at the interchange. The majority of the work for the rest of the project will take place overnight or at weekends and will require some closures of the southbound slip roads, the roundabout and the link road to the A577.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange

A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.

M6 Junction 34 Lancaster to Junction 33 Garstang

Work is underway to repair and improve drainage along a mile-long section of the M6 around Lancaster. The scheme, just north of junction 33, is due to be completed by Sunday 19 October. There is currently one lane closed on the southbound side of the motorway, and a 50mph speed limit is in place for safety reasons.

M6 Junction 35 Carnforth to Junction 38 Brough

A scheme is underway to improve drainage on sections of the M6 between junctions 35 and 38. The work requires the closure parts of Lane One on the northbound side of the motorway, 24 hours a day, along with parts of Lane One on the southbound side overnight, between 8pm and 6am. Sections of the hard shoulder will also be closed.

Work is taking place to modify the central reservation to make future bridge repairs safer and easier. The work is being carried out near Castle Howe bridge, just north of junction 38 of the motorway and is due to be completed by Monday 13 October. Lane 3 will be closed on both sides of the motorway around the clock, and some overnight closures will also be required of lane 2 along the southbound carriageway.

M6 Junction 42 to 43 Carlisle

There will be some overnight closures of the northbound and southbound carriageways, between 8pm and 6am, while resurfacing work takes place. The work is due to be completed in October.

M53 Junction 5 Queensferry to Junction 8 Netherpool

Resurfacing work is taking place on the M53 between junctions 5 and 8. Some overnight closures will be required between junctions until Friday 10 October. All the work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am, or until 7am on Saturdays and Sundays. Diversions will be in place when either the southbound or northbound carriageway is closed.

M56 Junction 12 Runcorn to Junction 14 Helsby

Work is taking place to resurface the westbound carriageway of the M56 between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14 at Helsby. The work will also include the replacement of worn road markings on the eastbound carriageway. All of the resurfacing will be done overnight between 10pm and 5am, Mondays to Fridays. Lane closures and some overnight diversions will be in place. During the day, drivers may also notice some hard shoulder closures associated with the work.

M57 Junctions 7 to 6 Kirkby

The southbound side of the M57 from junctions 7 to 6 is being resurfaced, requiring some lane closures. New reflective road studs and road markings are also being installed overnight between 10pm and 5am, or until 7am at weekends. A 50mph speed limit will be in place when the hard shoulder is being used as a running lane. The project is due to be completed by Monday 6 October.

M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The first stage of the smart motorway project will see engineers carry out site surveys and ground investigation work, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.

M60 Junction 24 Denton

Phase two of the Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57– a key commuter route into Manchester city centre. The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight. Some road and lane closures will be necessary.

A66 Appleby to Keswick

Three schemes are taking place to upgrade sections of the A66 between Appleby-in-Westmorland and Keswick. The projects include improving drainage, resurfacing the road and providing better road markings. A full closure of the westbound side of the A66 dual carriageway between the entry and exit slip roads for Appleby will be required overnight from 8pm on Friday 19 September until 6am on Saturday 20 September, with traffic being diverted through the town centre.

A66 Kirkby Thore

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for drainage work on the A66 near Kirby Thore until Sunday 26 October. The work will be carried out at off-peak times during the day, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and overnight between 8pm and 6am.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

The westbound carriageway on the A66 will require a series of closures while the Forestry Commission carries out tree felling at Wythop Forest. A contraflow system will be in place with a lane running in each direction along the eastbound carriageway. Temporary traffic lights will also be used on some occasions. The project is due to be completed by the end of November.

A66 Warcop

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A66 near Warcop while drainage work is carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

A483/A55 Roundabout, Chester

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are set to benefit from quicker and safer journeys as part of a major improvement of the A55 and A483 roundabout near Chester. Work to remodel the roundabout, south of the city, is due to be completed by the end of March and will require some overnight closures while the work takes place.

A585 Thornton-Cleveleys

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures are in place on the A585 between West Drive and Bourne Way in Thornton-Cleveleys while work is carried out to covert the road into a dual carriageway. The project is due to be completed in December.

A595 Whitehaven

Resurfacing work is being carried out along two sections of the A595 near Egremont and Bigrigg. All the work being done overnight, between 8pm and 6am, and a temporary speed limit and temporary traffic lights are in place. At times during the work, drivers will be held at the temporary traffic lights and, for safety reasons, will be led past the roadworks by a contractor’s vehicle at 10mph. The work is due to be completed by Saturday 11 October.

A5103 Manchester

Sections of the A5103 Princess Parkway and Princess Road in South Manchester will be closed overnight from Monday 22 September for resurfacing and other maintenance work. The scheme affects the route between Barlow Moor Road at West Didsbury and Sale Road at Northenden. Each side of the road will each be closed for up to three nights between 9pm and 5am, and the work is due to be completed in November.
