A retired petrophysicist who discovered Morecambe Bay’s rich gas fields has died aged 86.

John Bains uncovered the Irish Sea reserves in 1972 in what was a long and distinguished career.

His work was initially dismissed but drilling started two years later.

Three decades after his discovery, Mr Bains’ contribution to UK gas exploration and production was recognised when Centrica named its Bains gas field after him.
