Petition calls for Morecambe Broadway roundabout
Highway teams will monitor road safety at the Broadway junction in Morecambe following a campaign from concerned residents.
Residents of Marine Road East have set up a petition calling for a mini-roundabout at the Broadway junction and traffic calming measures on Dallam Avenue in Morecambe.
Lancashire County Council will review traffic at the junction once The Bay Gateway M6 link road is completed later this year.
Bernard Vause, of nearby Farringford Court, set up the petition and said the dangers are getting worse.
He said: “Eventually someone, young or old, is going to be seriously injured, something must be done.
“Children run across the road often risking life and limb. They come off the bus stop on Marine Road and will try and cross the road but there is no central reservation here. Surely it is immoral to suggest that action is taken only after an accident occurs. I witness the problems every day and will not rest until something is done.”
Mr Vause said traffic coming in and out of Dallam Avenue also causes a danger to children going to and from Morecambe Community High School (MCHS).
An MCHS staff member, who did not wish to be named, regularly holds up the 20mph sign outside the school to oncoming cars.
She said: “It is a rat run here on Dallam Avenue, some drive up on the pavement.
“Some drivers wave at me and some put the finger up at me.”
Matt Auger, headteacher at Morecambe Community High School, said: “Road safety is something that is extremely important for us as school; almost all students make their way to and from school by foot or on bicycle.
“We do a great deal to educate our young people as to the dangers of the road.
“We also however need to act as a community to ensure our roads and those using them are as safe as possible.”
County Councillor John Fillis, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The Bay Gateway is nearing completion and this will affect the surrounding road network and traffic levels. Once it opens, we’re planning to monitor the situation.”
